Playing the Field: Here are the Sports that Get You the Most Matches Online

When it comes to Tinder, men are three-times more likely to swipe right for women than women are for men. This statistic was published in the New York Times in 2014, but I don’t think it’s a huge jump to think that it still applies – and not just to Tinder. Because women are often inundated with matches online, they tend to be more cautious with their “likes” – regardless of the app.

However, fear not. There is a way you can increase your chances of a match for both sexes: by playing sports. In a recent study conducted by GolfSupport.com, they wanted to see whether playing a sport could enhance your chances of a right swipe and, if so, which sport would make you the most attractive to the opposite sex.

GolfSupport.com’s methodology was to swipe right for a total of 200 people for each profile type and leave the profile up for 2 days at a time. They discovered playing certain sports can more than double your chances of getting a Tinder match – especially if you’re a man.

On average, our male profile that did not mention any sport in its bio received 57 matches over the course of 2 days. However, for certain sports, those matches increased to as many as 120 in just as many days. On average, a male, sport-playing profile got 94.2 matches in 2 days.

Women’s success did not alter that much by mentioning a sport, but it did increase the number of matches. A non-sporty profile got 88 matches in 2 days and a sporty profile averaged at 98.4 matches, with some sports as high as 118 matches.

The most appealing sport for women? Rugby. According to the research, rugby players are more likely to receive matches than players of any other sport, at 120 matches. This was followed by Weightlifters (117 matches), Golfers (104 matches), Swimmers (102 matches) and Boxers (97 matches). Soccer players were left out of the top 5, but still came ahead of Dancers, Gymnasts, Cricketers and Equestrians.

(Excessive binge watching of Friday Night Lights aside, Football players surprisingly didn’t even make the cut when it came to favorable sports. However, I suspect this is because the study was conducted in the UK where American Football isn’t popular.)

When it comes to which sports are most appealing to men, the results were flipped. While rugby was the preferred sport of women looking for a potential partner, this was the last choice when men were right swiping. In fact, our female profile got fewer matches when the bio included “rugby player” at 74, compared to the 88 matches the profile got without a mention of any sport. The sports that seemed to please men the most were dance (118 matches), weightlifting (112), gymnastics (106), cricket (a surprising entry at 105 matches) and soccer (101).

Ahem, I don’t think you have to be a brain surgeon to decode why men are attracted to women who do sports like dance and gymnastics (#leotards) however, it’s interesting that women favor men who play team sports, while men tend to prioritize women who engage in solo sports.

I can’t help but wonder if this has something to do with what these sports represent. Rugby is a sport that requires a combination of determination and teamwork, whereas solo sports like weightlifting and gymnastics requirement both independence and determination — all qualities that the opposite sex may find extremely appealing when looking for a partner.

While it’s fun to ponder these things, the overall enthusiasm for sporty singles isn’t entirely surprising. Even if you’re not super sporty yourself, there’s something attractive about someone who plays a sport. An enthusiasm for sports signals a couple of things.

  • Fitness: No need to beat around the bush here. Humans are visual creatures. If someone plays a sport they’re likely healthy and in good shape. They might even feel more confident all around because of the above mentioned factors.
  • Outgoing: Rugby and other team sports aren’t for wallflowers. The ability to be part of a team suggests strength, determination, teamwork and good social skills.
  • Committed: Whether you play on a rugby team or prefer solo sports like running and dance, athleticism requires commitment — just like being in a relationship. If you’re able to commit to learning and practicing a sport it signals you may also be capable of doing the same when it comes to love.
  • Overall disposition: The research also revealed believing they were involved in sports meant women were more likely to associate positive traits with the males in the study, including being ‘more confident’, ‘healthier’, and with a better ‘emotion disposition’. It makes sense. If you’re exercising regularly, you’re releasing endorphins, which means you’re going to feel better mood-wise and have reduced stress levels — both positive things when it comes to having a healthy relationship with someone.

So, when you’re lying in bed trying to work up the nerve to get to the gym in honor of your New Year’s resolutions, consider this: not only will adding some athletic activity to your life boost your mood and confidence levels, it might just help score you a date.
